BARBANA
The island of Barbana lies in the middle of the lagoon of Grado and there has been a Marian
Sanctuary. The Sanctuary, rebuilt many times during the history, is now active and houses a Franciscan
Convent.
It is the aim of many pilgrimages, the best-known is called "Perdon di Barbana" which takes piace
on the first Sunday of July: it consists of a procession on the lagoon from Grado to Barbana. The
procession, which starts early in the morning, is led by the "Fisherboat", the boat which carries the
statue of the Madonna of the Angels. The origin of the pilgrimage has its origin in a vow made by
the people of Grado after the plague in 1237.
The taxi service invites you to visit the island of Barbana on a Venetian-style motor-boat boarding
from the port in the centre of Grado . The cruise lasts about 20 minutes and the length of the
stopover will be agreed when you make the booking.
